agreed, there’s so much that came before jaco, but there really wasn’t melodic bass as jaco played it before him. ron carter’s solo on take the a train is and always will be extraordinary, but he faded back into rhythm after the solo. jaco was different, i suppose, although i agree with you that many people don’t pay enough attention to the amazing music made before fusion….. oh well, more for us xD

“bass as a melodic lead did not exist before Jaco”

…of course the world, jazz, jazz rock, be-bop, brilliant upright bass players and soloists all came after Jaco…

    up-your-own-arse-muso…

  11. thesantoshow93 says:

John Entwhistle was a fantastic bass player.! definetely! You can’t say anything bad about him

  12. ltbmuse says:

No - I was just referring to that style of playing where the bass is not just harmonic underpinning but is a prominent melodic feature in the tune, with the bass played quite high up its range and with a fair amount of sustain.

  13. jeleopard says:

He really need to, how I say “Play with some Kahunas” He’s okay at times, but others… Uggghhh…

  18. ltbmuse says:

Jaco Pastorius redefined what bass guitar could sound like - just as Hendrix did with guitar before him. That whole ‘bass as a melodic lead’ did not exist before Jaco brought it to our ears. A short and brilliant life and a tragic end.
